FKSU - History

The fast development and the advances in the field of computer and information technologies as well as the very large number of IT companies that work in the area of development and application of computer and information technologies generates serious demand for high-qualified professionals in the computer science field that are able to use the recent technological innovations.

The interest in study in the Faculty “Computer Systems and Control” is very high in the last several years and increases each year due to the need of qualified computer engineers in all areas of application of the computer and information technologies: business, education, science, medicine, transport, etc.

The faculty “Computer Systems and Control” (FCSC) is founded in 1987 and is one of the biggest faculties at the Technical University of Sofia with long years of experience in training highly qualified professionals for the industry and the business.

The faculty comprises two departments: department “Computer Systems”, founded in 1969, and department “Programming and Computer Technologies”, founded in 1984. The department “Programming and Computer Technologies” is responsible for the education in programming and informatics for all programs and specialties at the TU-Sofia as well as the training of the students in one of the master degree specialties provided at the faculty. The Department “Computer Systems” (cs-tusofia.eu/cscience) offers bachelor and master degree education in 7 specialties and is aimed at providing the students with up-to-date knowledge in the field of computer engineering and competitive skills that are required for successful professional carrier.

The faculty staff comprises 23 professors – 3 full professors and 20 associated professors, 23 assistant professors and 11 assistants, 4 engineers and 8 technicians. More than 1600 students study in the faculty each year, about 1300 in bachelor degree specialties and more than 300 in master degree courses. About 40 Ph.D. students work on their theses in the faculty at the moment. Each year about 200 bachelor degree engineers and about 70 master degree engineers are graduated at the FCSC. The Bachelor and Master degree diplomas are recognized worldwide and are in full compliance with the laws and regulations of the European Union.

The lecturers in the faculty provide education in various specialized courses according to their research interests for other base faculties at he Technical University of Sofia (Faculty of Telecommunications, Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Technologies, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Transport, Faculty of Management) as well as in the three faculties for foreign language study (English Language Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of German Engineering Education and Industrial Management, French Language Faculty of Electrical Engineering). Faculty staff members are also involved in the training courses of the Postgraduate Department/Continuing Education Division as well as in the education of the Professional Secondary School of Computer technologies and Systems – Pravets. The lecturers in the faculty provide education in various specialized courses according to their research interests for other base faculties at the Technical University of Sofia (Faculty of Telecommunications, Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Technologies, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Transport, Faculty of Management) as well as in the three faculties for foreign language study (English Language Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of German Engineering Education and Industrial Management, French Language Faculty of Electrical Engineering). The faculty of Computer Systems and Control has about 20 research and training laboratories available for the training in the bachelor and master degree courses. The laboratories are equipped with up-to-date computers, specialized high-technology hardware, various peripheral devices, specialized software and laboratory kits. A laboratory “Virtual screening and computer modeling for drug design” were founded in 2007 and is equipped with 40 core computer cluster with the financial support of the research project funded by the Ministry of Education and Science, National Science Fund. In 2009 according to a joint project between Microsoft Bulgaria and FCSC “Innovation Centre” were established in one of the laboratories of the faculty which will be used for students labs and as well as staff training based on the recent innovations of the company. FCSC has close cooperation with many IT companies on Bulgaria aimed at providing high quality education and qualification and guarantees successful professional employment of the graduated computer engineers. FCSC has fruitful cooperation with many universities and institutes in Europe and has a very successful experience in students and staff motilities under Erasmus program. The faculty staff members and students has also participate in lots international and national research projects. The faculty organizes International Scientific Conference “Computer Science” that has been successful conducted four times (International Scientific Conference “ComputerScience’2004”, Sofia, Bulgaria, 7th Dec. 2004, Second International Scientific Conference “ComputerScience’2005”, Chalkidiki, Greece, 30th Sept. – 2nd Oct. 2005, Third International Scientific Conference “ComputerScience’2006”, Istanbul, Turkey, 12th – 16th Oct. 2006, Fourth International Scientific Conference “ComputerScience’2008”, Kavala, Greece, 17th – 20th Sept. 2008), Fifth International Scientific Conference “ComputerScience’2009”, Sofia, 3rd – 5th Nov. 2009), Sixth International Scientific Conference “ComputerScience’2011”, Ohrid, FYROM, 1st – 3rd Sep. 2011). The faculty “Computer Systems and Control” issues a periodical journal “Computer and Communication Engineering” where research papers in the field of computer systems and informational technologies are published. The academic environment in the Faculty “Computer Systems and Control” provides excellent opportunities to gain the relevant education, research knowledge and professional skills.
